About
Welcome to Chimaeralogue. In this blog, you will find a jumble of topics – games, writing, fan fiction and fandom, physics, student life, and other stuff, and maybe some pictures, too.
I’m 34 years old, living and writing in Houston, Texas, where I live with my husband and our three cats. Last year, I went mad decided that I wanted to be a physicist. Presently, I hold a BA in literature, and I have been working on an MA in digital media. So… physics? Yes, really. A long, long time ago, I wanted to be an astronomer, but I did poorly in math and science classes and was told that I was “unsuited for the sciences”. For a long, long time, I believed that. Last summer, I stopped believing it and began to believe that yes, a woman in her thirties can change her life and do what she wants to do. You can read about how I came to this fork in the road here, at my LiveJournal.
I’ve fallen in love with math and science – not just the studies themselves, but the histories all tied up in the human discovery of what makes our world real and solid – and I want to share the things I discover with my readers. I also want to share my experience as a non-traditional student in the sciences, and my adventures as I step into the world of physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and maybe even theoretical physics.
My other area of interest lies in “transmedia”, or whatever we’re calling it today, alternate reality games, and all the new ways we have to tell stories with the myriad choices for content delivery that today’s technology offers us. Once upon a time, we had fiction, and we had games, and the two didn’t necessarily intersect. Now, we have epic video games with stories that play out like novels on our screens with us behind the controls; we have television shows that reach out beyond the tv screen to bring the audience deeper into the story; we have apps on our phones that turn mundane tasks and daily life into a game. This intersection of fiction, play, and what we call “real life” is something that fascinates me and is what propelled me to pursue a Masters of Arts in digital media.
I hope that you’ll find something useful or entertaining here. Thanks for stopping by!
